What requirements are we looking for a system to make our top 10 all time game console? We’re looking for total impact on the industry, games, software, hardware, cost, popularity and longevity. The Sony Playstation 4 was officially released in North America on November 15, 2013. The system launched with a price point of $399 and came with a built-in Blu-ray disc drive. To date the system has sold an estimated 18 million units as of January 2015. The Playstation 4 is part of the eighth generation of game consoles that include the Xbox One and Nintendo Wii U.

The system next generation specifications included custom Playstation software with custom 8 cores AMD x86-64 Jaguar CPU. The memory is an 8GB of GDDR5 with 256MB DDR3 RAM. For storage the system is equipped with a 500GB hard drive. The display is HDMI 480p, 720p, 1080i and support for 4K for pictures and videos. The graphics are custom AMD GCN Radeon with network connectivity 802. 11 b/g/n wireless and support for Bluetooth 2.1, USB 3.0 and Ethernet port. The Playstation 4 online gaming service is called the Playstation Network. The system no longer is incorporating the difficult Cell architecture platform, the PlayStation 4 features the AMD x86-64 Accelerated Processing Unit to help make developing for the system easier plus attract more developers to support the system.

Coming out the gate the Playstation 4 demand was strong. Feedback on the Playstation 4 was mostly positive and overall the system has continued to gain traction among hard core Playstation console players. The Playstation 4 has an optional PlayStation Camera with motion sensing accessory and can support smartphones, tablets, and the PlayStation Vita can interact with the PlayStation 4 as second screen devices such as the Xbox One SmartGlass technology.

The Playstation 4 system has an impressive list of next generation games such as God of War, Assassin Creed titles, Call of Duty and Madden game franchise just to name a few popular titles. The system also support the Playstation Now, a service which will at the outset allow users to access PlayStation 3 games on the PS4 via a cloud-based streaming system, purchasing games individually or via a subscription. The Playstation Now platform is believed to share the technology from the Gaikai platform Sony acquired on July 02, 2012 for $380 million. The Playstation Now service was official release on January 13, 2015.

The Playstation 4 is truly impressive hardware, software and services that will definitely challenge other next generations’ game consoles. We would like to hear from the game community.
