Posted by: on May 7, 2015 | No Comments

Today I read some fascinating  news on Facebook regarding the release of its next generation virtual headset called “Oculus Rift”. The number one social network in the world has plans to release its game changing virtual headset platform earlier Q1 2016 for consumers and pre-orders will happen later this year. We covered Oculus Rift on TechGeniux a few weeks ago. I’m  curious to see the consumer version of the highly innovative VR (virtual reality) headset. The price and specs have yet to be release but reports say the creators of the device are looking for a $200 to $400 range, similar to the Oculus development kit pricing. The competition in this space is growing since the Oculus Rift arrived on the scene in 2012 as a Kickstarter project. The Kickstarter project raised $2.4 million in 2012 with the support of 9,522 backers. A few short years later on March 25, 2014, Facebook announced that it had acquired Oculus VR for $400 million in cash with a  eye-popping $1.6 billion in Facebook stock with additional cherry on the  top of $300 million if the Oculus VR hit certain financial targets.

This is truly a growing space with new VR products popping up from all the big technology companies. Each company is trying to stake their claim to the consumer virtual reality and video augmentation markets, which once were small market in the past. This writer isn’t a big VR enthusiast however the space is exciting and could change how we game and interact within a VR space. Just from my knowledge and experience this tech can be used for other opportunities outside gaming like medical, education and product prototyping. Only time will tell who or what VR device will emerge the top device of this generation, but the way the race is shaping up, it seems that the Facebook Oculus Rift has a clear head start on the competition!
